Gleaners...yes, that's what we are and we are proud of it! As we were organizing our new class, we were all agonizing over a new name. One of our teachers came up with "Gleaners", as we are constantly striving to nurture sound and healthy attitudes in our walk as mature Christians. We associate ourselves with "Ruth" and Naomi" as we go about our daily work. Whenever our class bank account gets a little large, we ask ourselves, "Who needs us?" It may be a missionary in Guatemala or a child in our own county. Whoever or wherever it may be, we are always ready! We have several projects that are constant and ongoing. One of them has to do with the flowers that are displayed in the church sanctuary each Sunday. If those who donated the flowers have no further use for them, we lovingly take them and make 3 - 6 separate floral arrangements. We then carry the new arrangements to the sick and homebound. Often the recipients are happier to see those who are delivering the flowers more than the actual flowers!
We also work with the Visitation Committee. The third Sunday of each month we follow up on a person's attendance with a letter or a visit.
Once a month we take a trip somewhere for lunch or dinner (after all we are Baptists!). Since we've started, we have been to The Vines in Loganville for lunch, to Buckner's at Jackson for dinner, and to Bonners in Buckhead. If you know of a great place for lunch or dinner, the class is always open to suggestions! The only expenses involved in these outings is paying for your own meal, and a little for gas for the church van.
Several years ago we decided to have a breakfast meeting at Shoney's. It was scheduled during the summer even though we usually do not schedule class outings during summer months. We liked it so much that we continued meeting a Shoney's for breakfast straight through the summer and even through the winter. We have been doing it every since then!
We have about 24 ladies in our class and are constantly on the lookout for "new blood"! Please feel free to visit us any time!
