Important Notice to Parents:
With the exception of infants up to age 2, in all of the children's programs offered at First Baptist, children are placed or promoted based on their ages at the calendar year beginning September 1 of each year. For example, a child who turns 6 years old on September 2 or after will be placed in the 4/5 year old class/group until the next calendar year begins. A child who turns 3-years old in March will remain (or, if new, will be placed) in the 2 year old class until the following September.
Infants are promoted to the 1-year old class based upon development rather than calendar year.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to a pleasant work in process. Behind these child-care doors you find a wonderful world of love and care. As you well know, the job of growing children is a never-ending process. Every parent knows nurturing children is a constant dynamic, requiring the assistance of caring outsiders who help us accomplish the job. No parent stands alone in the duty of growing his child; each day we trust the care of our children to others: Family, teachers, other child-care givers. Therefore, today we feel honored that you have entrusted your child to our care and pledge to you the best care for your child that we can give to assist you in this holy task.

Parents please note - This policy and procedures manual has been developed BY parents FOR parents with the goal of loving your children and your family in Christ. We have tried to be proactive and make clear decisions in advance of jost situations. These policies were written, studied, re-written, tuned, and then re-tuned into booklet form. Of course, we are aware not every circumstance can be pre-empted. New ideas come and old ideas pass, but this is the place we start in the care of your child. Please feel free to jot us a note if we are amiss of something that should be addressed.

The members of First Baptist Covington pray for you and your children. We pray these policies and procedures will help us to become all God would want us to be. Please call me if I can help you be a better caregiver to children.

Faithfully,
Len Strozier, Pastor
II. Preschool Committee
This committee is in place with a maximum of twelve members, including a chair or two co-chairs, made up of parents of preschoolers, Sunday School workers, and/or other members who have hearts for children. This committee is responsible for ensuring that adequate care coverage of the preschool is provided during operational hours and at special functions. This is done through a combination of a rolling volunteer force of congregation members on Sunday mornings, and the hiring and administration of a paid staff in order to provide consistent faces and care for our children. The preschool committee also works in conjunction with the Children's Committee to organize several seasonal functions for the enjoyment of the children.

III. Preschool Policy
The policy of the Preschool Committee and the Preschool Department of First Baptist Church is to offer safe and secure childcare in a Christian environment.
The procedures in this brochure are set forth in support of this policy. The express purpose is to benefit the safety and welfare of the children as well as the parents, teachers, workers and volunteers in all of First Baptist Church's Preschool Ministries, including Sunday School, Worship Service, Choir, Mission Friends, and child care offered for special functions.

Your cooperation in implementing these policies is crucial to the success of our ministries here at FBC, Covington.

IV. Availability of Childcare
A. General Operational Hours: Preschool Service is regularly available during the following posted hours:
Sunday morning: 8:15am - 12:15pm
(During the 11am service hour, Children from the 4/5 class go to Sanctuary and then Children's Church)
Sunday evening: 5:45pm - 7:15pm
(Children ages 5+ go to Sanctuary for service)

Wednesday evening: 6:00pm - 8:30pm

This service is provided for children from birth through kindergarten age whose parents/guardians are participating in a church function (i.e.: Sunday Services, regularly scheduled Wednesday activities, etc.)

*The Preschool may also be available for various special functions or committee meetings.

B. Parents of Preschoolers who are congregation members are expected to share in rotation of nursery duties (typically no more than four times per year).
C. Paid workers must:

  • Complete a criminal background check
  • Consent to and pass a basic physical
  • Be at least 16 years of age to assist and 18 years of age to be left in charge of a class
D. Volunteers must be members of the church for a minimum of 3 months.

V. Receiving and Dismissal

  1. Visiting and member preschoolers are registered at the check-in desk using the Sunday School log, or standard visitor cards. Parents must indicate the area(s) in which they can be located in case of emergency.
  2. At check-in, parents and children are given corresponding numerical identification tags. Parents must present their tags when children are picked up. The same parent who signs the child in should also sign the child out. **Children are not released to anyone under age 13.
  3. Visual paging systems are located in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall - your child is assigned a number that matches the tag you will receive. That number will flash in the event that you are needed in the preschool.
  4. Visitors with infants, 1's and/or 2's are also asked to complete a special information sheet at each visit. These sheets are located on clipboards outside the classrooms, and are designed to aid teachers and other caregivers in knowing your child's habits, allergies, sleep and eating patterns.
  5. Preschoolers may be received as early as 15 minutes before each session, and should be picked up immediately following a church function. Preschoolers are easily upset when they are the last ones in a room.
  6. If there are no preschoolers present twenty (20) minutes after a scheduled event begins, teachers and other caregivers may leave.
  7. Preschoolers may be brought to the preschool area only when the person bringing them is attending the church function.
  8. A child cannot be left in a preschool room unless a caregiver is present. If you arrive before the teachers or other caregivers, please remain with your preschooler until a caregiver arrives and is ready to receive your child.
  9. Doors to preschool rooms are kept closed. Only preschoolers, teachers, and caregivers will be allowed in the preschool room. A caregiver will meet you at the door both to welcome and to release your child. To minimize separation anxiety, parents are encouraged to say goodbye and promptly leave without entering the room.
  10. Family members and friends, with the exception of nursing mothers, are encouraged to refrain from visiting their children during functions. These visits are disruptive to the class. However, feel free to watch classes through the window panels on the doors if you think you can do so unseen by your child!
  11. Children are not allowed in the resource room - this room is designated for use by teachers, volunteers, workers, and nursing mothers.
  12. Following a function, numerical tags should be returned in order to retrieve children. Please refrain from bringing entire families into the preschool - one or two parents or guardians is sufficient. This will help eliminate chaos and confusion!
VI. Security
Outside doors at the farthest end of the preschool are fire exits only - please enter and exit through the main entryway, the double doors that connect with the main facility.
In addition to our check-in/out procedures and our visual paging system, the main entryway to the preschool area is equipped with a secured access entry. During some evening hours and special functions when the church building is not fully occupied, all doors with direct access to the preschool will be locked. Parents will be given security codes to gain access back into the preschool through the main entryway. These codes will be changed on a daily basis for added security. If your child will be staying past 7pm on Wednesday nights, please ask for the code.

VII. Amenities for Nursing Mothers
Our resource room is directly adjacent to the infant room, and is equipped with a rocking chair and a privacy curtain for the comfort of our nursing mothers.

VIII. Other Features
Each room in our preschool department, including the resource room, is equipped with a sound system that will enable room occupants to listen to the services that are offered in the main Sanctuary any time the sound system in the Sanctuary is in use.
Finally, we are equipped with two spacious playgrounds. The toddler playground is accessed directly from the preschool building for added safety. The older children's playground features state-of-the-art playground equipment.

IX. Personal Items
  • Please label all personal belongings with your child's name. This includes clothing, diaper bags, blankets, pacifiers, bottles, juice cups, etc. For your convenience, the FBC Preschool Committee will provide diaper bag tags, which also include space to list allergies, etc. One per child with a diaper bag, please.
  • Parents of younger preschoolers in diapers or in training need to bring extra diapers, training pants (if applicable), wipes, and a complete change of clothing, as well as any ointments or lotions to be used.
  • Preschoolers should not bring personal toys or other playthings to their classes (with the exception of security/soothing items for our infant preschoolers). Our rooms are well supplied with appropriate equipment and toys for each age level.
  • Preschoolers are often involved in art activities. Although smocks are used to protect clothing, occasional soiling will occur. Children's clothing should be washable.

X. Food and Refreshments
  • Parents of preschoolers under age 2 may provide filled plastic bottles or cups labeled with the child's name. A refrigerator, microwave and crock-pot are available for chilling and warming. Please inform us of your desired bottle-heating method. Time and circumstances do not allow for spoon-feeding. We will provide snacks for preschoolers ages 2-5.
  • Snacks and food activities are a common occurrence in the Preschool Department. If your child has any food allergies, PLEASE NOTIFY HIS/HER TEACHER.
  • Hot liquids are not allowed in the preschool when children are present.

XI. Health/Hygiene Policies

  1. For the health and safety of all the children and caregivers, parents are asked not to bring their child(ren) to a church program or function if they display ANY of the following conditions:

An accident sheet should be completed for anything other than minor cuts/bruises. These sheets are located on a clipboard in the resource room near the First aid kits. Parents should receive a copy.
    • Should an illness or injury appear to require medical attention, caregivers will: 1) use the paging system to notify any medically trained congregation member with a 911 page; 2) page the parent via the child's assigned number, and 3) phone 911 if circumstances warrant.
    • Latex gloves are worn when administering first aid.
    • Medications will NOT be administered.
    • The preschool should be provided with a written record of serious allergies or health/behavioral problems, or special needs.

    • State approved disinfectant solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) is mixed daily.
    • Classes are never left unattended for any reason.
    • Crock-pot is filled with fresh water and turned on low at the start of each session that will include bottle-fed babies. It is emptied and turned off at the close of the session.
    • Children who continuously misbehave, disobey, and disrupt classes may be placed in "time-out" within the classroom, so as not to disturb or cause harm to other children. Should the "time-out" not succeed, the parent may be notified.
