The philosophy behind the 6th grade Sunday school class is simple, "Guide the students to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and equip them for the years ahead by teaching Biblical principles and morals in a fun and exciting manner". As the teacher, I believe that the students are entering one of the jost critical periods of their lives. Adolescence by definition is a period of change. The physical and psychological changes by themselves are scary enough, but throw in the peer pressure and temptations that 6th graders are faced with each day and their lives can be overwhelming. This is why it is so important for them to have a strong Christian foundation that they can stand on when making lifelong decisions or when times get tough. The objective of this class is to teach the students how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to pursue this relationship on a daily basis. Each week the students are asked to fill out a card with the following information:
Did you bring your Bible?
How many days did you read your Bible during the past week?
Are you going to a worship service today?
Did you bring any visitors?
Will you pray out loud at the end of class for the concerns of the class?
At the end of the quarter the student with the jost points is given a prize. The purpose of this is not to give a prize but to encourage the students to seek and follow Jesus each day. My goal is to instill good habits that they will carry with them the rest of their lives.
The lessons are taught in a manner, which involves having fun while focusing on a central Bible theme. This can be achieved through activities such as playing games, making art projects, or acting out skits. At the end of class the main theme is re-emphasized and the students are encouraged to voice any praises or prayer concerns that they may have and the class ends with these praises and prayers being lifted up to God.
